This year's Christmas presents for myself

So, on every occasion were gifts are mandatory, I get myself presents. So, I get birthday, Christmas and Valentine's Day gifts from me. Not quite like that, but I do indulge on anything I've been wanting and call it a gift from me to me...

This year, I discovered this awesome store on etsy, The Curious Nomad, and I fell in love with her necklaces. I ordered one of them and reserved the other. Then I eventually bought the second one. Now that I have both in my hands, I know that I couldn't have spent my money in any other way (I could, but not on such beauty).

This is the necklace I bought first. It's called Utopia. Yes, ALL necklaces at the store have a name.

I had to reserve Ghalia (which actually means precious in Arabic) because it captured my attention. I eventually went back for it. Isn't it beautiful??

Apart from the absolute gorgeousness of the necklaces, you have to factor in that they come all the way from Dubai!!! Yes, Sana lives over there and somehow manages to send the gifts for the shipping cost and in the same time that any other purchase I have done from US stores.

On top of all of that, the packaging is absolutely beautiful and full of little surprises. I really, REALLY can't recommend her shop enough.

I know, this is to late for a gift guide. So that's not it. Too late for a wish list too. So that's not it. So, it's just a beautiful collection of etsy stuff I would buy as presents for myself this Christmas (if I had money to buy all of them).

For the record, there will be no presents this year. Austerity rules this year. Or like @shitmydadsays tweets: "Everybody's broke, so here's the rule for Christmas this year; if you still shit your pants, you get a present. Otherwise tough shit."

I had been absent.
I had posted sporadically.

I had a lot to handle in this semester. I, for the first time, have had a regular work along with school. School was quite hard this fall too. My dad was offered a job in another city and he's been working over there since mid-October. He has come to visit, but I still miss him so much. There have been problems too, much uglier than I am prepared to accept publicly in this blog, and I just couldn't get myself to post usually as I did once. The finals were so hard and nerve-racking, but I'm now on vacation and will be until February 2nd. Christmas isn't as happy this year as I wanted it to be, and that sucks! I had incredible plans for it that won't be happening and the gloomy holiday mood has set in. Well, at least I have a promising trip planned for New Year's Eve.

So well, that's it in a nutshell.
Just in case you were wondering.

So, I'll post a bit today, maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after that, but I will be taking the last days of the year and the decade off since I will be going away.
I hope to resume posting when I've had a fresh start for the year and have come back from my completely unplanned adventure somewhere in the first two weeks of January.

Inglourious Basterds

This is not a movie review.

While I liked Inglorious Basterds a lot (and I mean A LOT), I have been skeptical of ultra-violent movies like this one for a while. I used to love them. Just now I have begun thinking about the implications of changing history on a movie and doing it as violently as Tarantino did it.
But that's not the point of this post since this is not a very serious blog.

What I wanted to tell you was that I loved the look of the movie. I especially loved the fashion. I saw the looks and wanted dress like that. I've always loved the look of the 40s, but after Inglorious Basterds I think I understand people like Miriam Parkman of Kafferepet.
Although I liked the look of Diane Kruger, I loooooved the look of Melanie Laurent who played Shoshanna Dreyfus. All in all, even if the movie had had the worst story, the worst photography, the worst dialogues, ugly people, bad direction, no publicity, it would have still done it for me because of the costumes.

Back to school.

Yuck.

That was my reaction last week on my first day. Yeah, I wanted more vacations but it was no biggie. I was seeing all my friends again, everything was cool.

Day 2.
I am assigned as the first person to present in a class... A presentation?? Not so bad. Unless, it is the first version of my final essay. And it's due August 27. Yes, that's next Thursday. Yes, I have only a week to find a topic, read like crazy, and write something decent unless I want to fail.

So, all week I've been reading like crazy. Books, journal articles, anthologies, etc. I've made copies of over 10 books. I didn't go out of the house all weekend.

Today.
My essay is due tomorrow. A 7 page advance of my essay. I have written four. I am blogging. I still have to read some 50 pages for my essay. And other 50 pages for my other classes. I have to write 3 more pages. I have to go to class.

I don't think I will be getting much sleep tonight.

Oh yeah, and my complete and finished essay is due September 10th. Yes, I will have handed in my FINAL essay during the first month. My grade is going to be determined by then, but I still have to attend class and do the readings.

That's what back to school means to me....

Yummy Carrot Cake...

I had never baked a cake from scratch. I always used to buy boxed mixes, but then I read somewhere that it isn't actually quicker to do so...
So, the other day, for a friend's birthday I decided to bake him a cake. A carrot cake.

I didn't know what I was doing but the amazing recipe by Nicole from Pinch My Salt sure helped. It turned out great, and it was delicious!!!! I can say it is right in my top 3 of carrot cakes I've ever tasted. Yeah, I'm not being humble about it; I'm really proud.

Although it took a bit longer to cook than what the recipe said, nothing went wrong. I even added another half cup of grated carrot and it was all OK. The cream cheese frosting was absolutely perfect for the cake. I didn't do a double deck cake like the one in the picture but it still looked so beautiful.

I'll definitely make this cake again. I so want to eat it... Bad thing is, my friend kept the rest of the cake.

Oh, and the blog where it came from, Pinch My Salt , has a lot of other incredible recipes. I've tried a few and I can say I have never been disappointed.

Peach in Champagne
July 1948
Place in a peach Champagne glass or oversized goblet a sound, ripe white-peach. With the tines of a silver fork perforate the skin of the peach all around. Fill the glass with ice-cold Champagne, start the punctured peach to spinning, and let the Champagne fizz for a minute before drinking.

Aristocrat Sparkling Punch
February 1942
Dissolve 1 cup cube sugar in 1 cup—from a quart—of sparkling water, and pour into a punch bowl. Add 1 bottle Burgundy and 4 ounces brandy, stirring well. Place a block of ice in the bowl, and pour in 2 bottles Champagne and the rest of the sparkling water. Garnish the top of the ice block with strawberries or raspberries, or other fruit in season, and float thin slices of 2 oranges on the punch.

August 1953
In a shaker combine the juice of half a lime, 1 teaspoon grenadine, 3/4 ounce cherry brandy, 2 ounces gin, and a dash of benedictine. Pour the liquid into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice and stir vigorously. Fill the glass with sparkling water, garnish with a slice of orange and sprig of mint, and serve with straws.

Gourmet’s Champagne Punch
June 1959
Peel, core, and slice 3 small ripe pineapples. Put the slices in a bowl, sprinkle them with 1 pound very fine sugar, and cover the fruit. Let it stand for at least 1 hour. Add 1 pint Cognac, 1 cup lemon juice, 3/4 cup eau de vie de framboise, 1/2 cup peach brandy, and 1/4 cup maraschino liqueur. Blend the mixture gently, cover it, and allow it to ripen overnight. At serving time, pour the mixture over a large block of ice in a punch bowl and slowly add 5 bottles chilled Champagne. Garnish the bowl with raspberries, sprigs of mint, lemons and oranges, thinly sliced, and any other fruits desired. Add a little fruit to each punch cup. Makes approximately 8 1/2 quarts.

In the container of a blender blend together 1 1/4 ounces each of light rum and pineapple juice, 1 ounce each of blue Curacao and lemon juice, a small cube of fresh pineapple, and crushed ice. Pour the drink into a punch glass and garnish it with a cherry and a small wedge of fresh pineapple. Makes 1 drink.

Herbal Bloody Mary
July 1960
To 1 1/2 quarts tomato juice, add 1 tablespoon chopped chives, 1 teaspoon each of soy sauce and monosodium glutamate, 1/2 teaspoon each of chopped marjoram, basil, and savory, salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste, and the juice of 1 lemon. Chill the mixture overnight. To serve, strain 4 ounces of the mixture into an 8-ounce glass filled with ice cubes and add 2 ounces vodka.

Christmas in July

I had heard about Christmas in July twice in my life before this week. The most memorable time was a marathon on Cartoon Network featuring all those incredible shows we only get to see once a year. But this week was madness. Everywhere I went I heard about Christmas while I used sleeveless shirts and short skirts and sunglasses. It's crazy. I can't even start to think of gifts and trees and "snow" (which we don't have here, not even in winter although it does get cold) and reindeers and polar beers and elves.
Coming to think of it, I don't even know how people who live in hot, hot places actually celebrate Christmas. Decorated pine trees at the beach? Fake snow on the windows? How do people in the Southern Hemisphere cope with that holiday schizophrenia that is Christmas during summer?!?!?!?! I've never quite understood it, so I guess I'll have to go to the other side of the equator to find out, or maybe I'll just ask my cousin in Brazil.

I realize I'll have to work on the weekend if I want to finish all this by monday. Suddenly, it doesn't seem that far from my last job except that this one is about statistics and the other one about movies. Hmmmm....???

Yesterday I was on my way home on a bus.
There was an Asian girl. She wasn't really beautiful, but she was impeccable, Sartorialist-worthy.
She had beautiful shoes with wooden details. Brown pants and a huge red bag, which I thought of stealing.
There was a man with every possible hair color on his full beard. And he had beautiful, deep, blue eyes.
There was a young girl with a cane. She was too young to have one, I think.
I didn't notice her until it was too late. Someone else gave her their seat.
Meanwhile, I read about language and Shakespeare, and sight and hearing. The Gutenberg Galaxy.
It's too 60s, I think. There's no place for the web in that theory (so far. I'm on page 39)
And it's raining, and it reminds me of London.

I have been finding the most amazing videos on YouTube, Vimeo, and TED and have been sharing some of them here, but there are a looooooooooooooot and I didn't want to include all of them in the blog reviews, so I came up with this: A Video, A Day.

Sitting bored at work and a desire for the beach

Today is my first official work day. I'm kind of bored. I don't have much to do.
I've been on blogs, facebook and twitter all day.

I had tricked myself into believing that I'd find the time to go on vacation with my friends, even just a weekend would be fine, I said. But sitting here and browsing the web made me realize that not only do I want to go out of the city for a while, but I also desperately need the beach. I had repeatedly told myself that I wanted to go to a colonial city and explore, explore, explore. I want that too... but the beach is so much at the essence of what a summer vacation is.

So, I think I wait till I am paid and then wander around during weekends or maybe even skip a day from work. (Always a good first day thought).

This are the incredible photos that made me realize I do want the beach. They're part of a series called Windows by Denise Kupferschmidt, whom I found via Design for Mankind today.
