Pan Am Stewardess

I recently added a new item to the store. It's a Vintage Pan Am Stewardess Badge. I really, really love it.
Well, the thing is that while I was tweaking the listing on Etsy I decided to look a bit more into Pan Am to incorporate some fun trivia to the listing. I found the most amazing article about a girl who was a Pan Am stewardess, and she tells the most incredible things. Her name is Valeria Waterman and she flew around the world in the 70s with Pan Am. She got to know her passengers, played chess with them. She worked the Pan Am route to Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Delhi, Beirut and Istanbul all in just 10 days!! She was in the last plane leaving Saigon in 1976 during the Vietnam War.
So, to read the whole story go over to Ultra Swank.

Shopping day!!!

Well, yesterday was photo day and today it's shopping day. I guess I am getting into the themed day mood. Wonder what tomorrow may be...

I recruited my best friend and went to the city centre. My intentions were various. First, I wanted to thrift a bit before the holidays so I can have stuff to list on my shop for the New Year.

------

*Note: Didn't you hear?? I'm revamping the shop. Seems like you need a Panoptica update that can be found if you subscribe to my newsletter **wink**wink** ------>

----- shameless promo over

So, yeah. I went thrifting and found three amazing pairs of eyeglasses. But really really amazing!!! I still can't get over those. They are among the best since I started buying eyeglasses for the shop.

I also found some cool patches and badges. They need a little cleaning, but they're beautiful. I bought a semi perpetual calendar that rotates. It's a difficult one to explain; I guess you 'll have to wait for the pictures.

The photo above was found using Google and looking for thrifting images. Wouldn't it be a thrill to thrift at a place like that?? I do my thrifting at bazaars and ugly stores with old stuff but some great treasures.

Well, the other purpose of my outing today was to find a nice scarf for my mom. It wasn't difficult let me tell you. I found a lovely silky scarf in a beige/grey color I think she'll love. I have been telling her FOR MONTHS that she'd look good on a scarf like that. And so I bought it for her...

Oh, and I also bought a dye for a denim skirt I'm going to alter...

So excited...

Photo day

I was so eager to take photos today, so I went around the house taking pictures.
This are some of them. If you want to see the rest go over to my flickr.

Oh, the top pic is the backdrop I use for my etsy photos and some of the ones I took today...

Blogosphere Lurk

THat's what I do... I lurk through the blogosphere (as I do on forum threads). Sometimes I leave comments, but otherwise I read and read and take in stuff and bookmark on del.icio.us or reader.

The Fab Miss B wrote a post about this cool project by ReadyMade that focuses on art posters for the new economic crisis resembling those that were made in the 30s. Here's her fave one, and mine too. Go to the ReadyMade link above and you can read the article and download this and all the other posters.

Besides reading The Sartorialist, I have taken to read other fashion inspiration blogs. I came across one named Face Hunter and they have amazing pictures. They are based in London.

oVer at Booooooom! they did a Top 5 videos of 2008 list and this was number 5. It is incredibly creative and beautiful. It's Kraak & Smaak's Squeeze Me. (Psst... my computer is a bit slow so I haven't really seen the other 4 top videos, but you can see them yourself here).

ANother video: this one features the street art of Aakash Nihalani. Found over at Le Territoire des Sens.

Happy Holidays everyone!!!

Winter Wonderland of Blogs

This is a blogosphere review in disguise.
Let's start already and do it in Christmas, white, wintery style:

On the comments for the last blogosphere watch, my dear Ruthie (aka roseworksjewelry) mentioned she didn't need more blogs to follow. Well, this week it's her blog that we are following. She posted this incredible video of the Muppets and John Denver singing Twelve Days of Christmas. This is my favorite Christmas carol, this very version. And don't you love how Fozzie keeps forgetting his part??

Today was doillies day. Really, I saw doillies everywhere. First, frozen doillies (yes, like doillies in ice) over at resurrection fern, and then a beautiful ok doillie over at we make words.

Joanna Goddard showed some nice headpieces in both her blogs (Smitten and A Cup of Jo). I looked a bit further and found this close-up pictures. Notice that these are pics so similar, yet they are from two different photographers and situations.

Camilla Engman made a nice tutorial to make oh so wintery, paper snowflakes.

Guy Sargent is an amazing photographer I found over at Le territoire des sens.

And finally a blog I have wanted to introduce for about a week now. You know how I had talked about themes?? Well, this one is the ultimate themed blog. Each post is a new theme. It's full of beautiful pics and trivia and awesomeness. Please welcome LenoreNeverMore. Her latest post was about eskimos. How much colder and wintery and white does it get?? oH... and she's a reader of Panoptica too, so I hope she catches this post...

Well, hope you like this wintery wonderland of blogs. Another blogosphere review will be up soon with all the cool stuff that don't happen to fit this theme.

More nochebuenas....

I posted about nochebuenas a little while ago...

i illustrated my post with Etsy sellers' art, but what i had originally intended to do was to take my own pics of poinsettias and upload them. Given the time constraints of final season, I opted to use and feature Etsy sellers, otherwise my carnival post wouldn't be done on time. However, I have taken some pics, and I'm ready to share them now...

They are all in my flickr if you wish to see...

Rockabilly video...

I had to post this video made by one of my friends. It's a music video for a rockabilly band called Rebel Cats.

Free Encouragement project

Have you heard about this project by Booooooom! and Design for Mankind??

Well, it's called the Free Encouragement project:

So here’s the deal: There is just so much negativity all around us these days, have you noticed? It’s infesting the internet, it’s taking over the big screen, it’s cutting you off, it’s showing up on your bank statement, it’s staining your new shirt, it’s breathing down your neck, it’s not giving you a vacation, it’s talking behind your back, it’s stuffing you in a locker, it’s cheating on you, it’s charging you more, it’s giving you less, and it’s making you miserable!

It’s making me miserable! I don’t think I know of a single person who couldn’t use some encouragement, so here it is! This is a two-part project, and the first part is simple: We are going to create a gallery of encouragement!

You can use this gallery to encourage a close friend or someone you just happened to pass by on the street. You can encourage a relative who may be ill or the girl who handed you your coffee this morning. You could even use this place to encourage yourself!

I sent my encouragement for a friend and it got published!! Here is it...

Word of the Year....

I saw this a while ago and totally forgot about it...

Isn't it a fitting word for the times??

“a person who lives a frugal lifestyle but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying secondhand, growing own produce, etc.”

Go see the complete article over at the NYT.

Collecting well worn paperback editions is a noble pursuit. There is nothing so alive as a book which has been generously read, creased, written upon, loved and ultimately discarded.

I don't know how trustable this citation is, but I like the quote.
I don't collect well worn paperbacks, but I do buy them and read them, and sometimes give them as gifts.

Blogosphere Watch

Oh God!! It's been a while since I've done one, but now I'm reading more and more blogs every time. I think I'm addicted!! Google Reader helps me a lot though...
So let me start with my old favorites:
Design for Mankind is having a giveaway.

Dear Ada is featuring the fabulous James Gallagher.

And then off to new things!!!

I resisted The Sartorialist for quite a while, but now I'm hooked. Needless to say I don't dress like that, but I'd love to!!!

The Fab Miss B blogged about an awesome singer called Josh Ritter, and I fell for his music. Tsk, tsk, she's an EtsyBlogger too...

The Atlas of Hidden Water is a UNESCO project to go with the Convention on Transboundary Aquifers. Found on BLDGBLOG.

SpottedCowSoaps
What kind of name is that???
Come on, we all know she's really called Ms. Moo!!!

Ms. Moo is definetely one of those EtsyBloggers everyone knows. At least I think they do. Her constant presence in the etsy forum threads makes me think they should know her. She's a real cool gal from Vermont who makes soaps. And SOME soaps... My mouth waters when I see her shop. But remember that soap shouldn't be eaten, otherwise you'll get butt bubbles. Besides that, I always want to shop in her shop (although I haven't purchased from her YET).

So for delighting us with her soap yumminess and encouraging our consumerism,
WE LOVE YOU MS.MOO!!!

oH, and aren't her item pics incredible???

THis is m 75th post!!! Yay...

Nochebuenas

Nochebuenas are my favorite part of the holiday season. This is what you call poinsettias in English. The Spanish word for poinsettias, Nochebuena, means literally 'good night'.

I have one in my backyard, and it blooms really early, so I always start getting excited about Christmas in September. This plant is natively Mexican and it's a big big part of the holiday decoration here. I don't have much more to say, so I went to our trusty wikipedia and compilled some cool facts:
  • The name "poinsettia" is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828.
  • In Turkey, poinsettias are called Atatürk çiçeği ("Flower of Atatürk")
  • In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, the plant is called Cuitlaxochitl meaning "star flower." The Aztecs used the plant to produce red dye and as fever medication.
  • The plants' association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan monks in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations.

by JMcGuinness

Oh, and apparently there is a cocktail called poinsettia, that I am sooooooo gonna try this holiday season. A poinsettia cocktail is a mixture of dry sparkling white wine, vodka, and cranberry juice. Yum!!!!

I had a bad day...

I had a rough day. My printer is not being nice to me. I'm not feeling ok, either. But hey, here's my latest etsy purchase from JinnysTreasures. Bought it yesterday. I am debating if I should keep it for myself or give it to a friend for Christmas.

I am having finals and I WANT THEM TO END RIGHT NOW!!! Really, please?!?!?!

I want to find a way to go asleep tonight and wake up on December 13 fully rested, happy and having aced all my subjects. Possible? No... Desireable?? OF COURSE!!!

Well, that's all for today, and remember about the Trashion Trunk Show and the EtsyBloggers Holiday Sale!!!

Team Trashion Encourages Shoppers to Go Green on Black Friday

Going back as far as the 1960’s, the day after Thanksgiving has held the unfortunate title of Black Friday. The name was given due to the madness that happens in highly commercialized places of commerce, but mostly because of the heavy traffic on that day. Folks are at the mall before the sun comes up, cars fill freeways and parking lots, money is burned on mass produced products and the gas it takes to get to them. It can get ugly.

Team Trashion, a unique, eco friendly, international group of artisans on etsy.com visualizes a different sort of Friday following Thanksgiving. Team Trashion wants to encourage families to keep the car in the garage, leave their slippers on and curl up with loved ones and a second helping of pumpkin pie. Doesn’t that sound great?

On Friday, November 28, Team Trashion will provide holiday shoppers with a unique opportunity to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts that are innovative and eco friendly. Buyers will be able to connect directly with sellers at a virtual Trunk Show on www.etsy.com. Over 30 Team Trashion artisans will be showing a varied collection of handmade treasures all created from upcycled, repurposed or otherwise abandoned materials. The Team Trashion Green Friday Trunk Show will be overflowing with holiday shopping opportunities that would make Mother Earth proud. You will not want to miss it!

The Team Trashion Green Friday Trunk Show is at 7pm est – just the perfect time to grab a cup of tea and do a little shopping in the comfort of your own home. Here’s how you get there:

1 - Log on to www.etsy.com If you do not have an Etsy account click here it's free to join, and you'll be glad you did!

2 - Choose the “community” tab at the top of the home page.

3 - Choose the “Virtual Labs” tab at the top of the community page.

4 - Choose the GREEN Treehouse “room” within the Virtual Labs.

5 - Sit back and enjoy the Trunk Show!

It will be great to see you there.

Shop like crazy...

In the last month I have gone crazy about Etsy. Well, I was already, but now I have been shopping. It gives me a thrill. Adding items to my cart and clicking checkout and paying over at paypal. It's such a rush to know I can afford it!!! Well, I have practically spent all the money I have earned on Etsy.

In my defense, more than half of what I bought will be made into awesome stuff I will sell, so it is an investment rather than spending just like that.

SO, I'm gonna show you all the things that have passed through my shopping cart lately.

This are from ClosetAddiction, for whom I have professed my undying love before. She's a member of Trashion Team with her other store. They are bobby pins with rounded pads.
Purchased on October 20.

These earrings were bought from JustineJustine. It was her first sale!!! She's a fellow member of the Mexico Team. They are really so truly beautiful. They brought earring happiness to my life again. I'm wearing them right now, actually.
Purchased on November 5.

These paper rounds are from LilyPadLounge. She has an awesome collection of new and vintage papers. I haven't received these, but I'm waiting anxiously. Some nice bottlecap brooches are coming out of these.
Purchased on November 8.

This gloves are from LazyTCrochet. She's a fellow EtsyBlogger. During BlockheadRadio Show we made a little sneak attack on LazyT's shop. I still don't know if I'm gonna keep these for myself or give them as a gift to my niece. I'll now when I receive them and put them on. I'm pretty sure I won't resist.
Purchased on November 17.

And finally, today's purchase, the one who gave me the idea to start this post. I had been eyeing scrabble tiles for a while but these ones from Pinkee made me drool. They are, as she puts it, wannabe scrabble tiles, but they are so cute. This purchase is half an investment and half for crafting a gift.
Purchased on November 18.
